It was a fine early morning in the city of Pennsylvania. Megan Andrews walked along the ocean shore, watching the waves crest blankets on top of the bluish-green water. She stared at the morning orange sun that was sizzling behind the rippling sea. She spread out her arms and hugged the sun, which slowly dragged upwards brightening the whole city. Cool breeze caught her hair, making it dance lightly against her face. Megan took a deep breath and started walking back to the beach house situated near the beach that overlooked the ocean. Suddenly she heard a familiar voice nearing her. He was yelling loudly from the top of his voice.
“Matt! What are you doing here early this morning?” she cried.
Matt was a handsome bloke with his black hair combed back neatly.
“I told her!” he gasped trying to get his breath back. “I told her Megan. I told Jess I love her,” he gasped again.
Suddenly, Megan’s heart sank with pain. She felt like gushing out into tears and so heartbroken as if she was drowning in her own tears. She tried to avoid her weary face from him and pretended to be happy for him.
“Megan, you’ve always been my best and closest friend and you were the first person I could talk to. You don’t know how happy I am and the luckiest person.” Matt stated with a deep tone as if there was seriousness in his voice. “Jessica is the most prettiest and beautiful girl I’ve ever met,” he sighed with an enlightened face.
“I am very happy for you Matt and I pray to god the you two have a great relationship.” She said with a pretense look in her face. “Matt, I have loads of work to do. I’ll catch up with you later,” she said.
“Okay, I’ll talk to you soon. Bye,” said Matt with an excitement and fled off running along the beach.
“I love you Matt,” she whispered to herself. “I love you.”
Megan couldn’t get to sleep. She was mixed with unbearable emotions, which was fiddling with her mind since the morning. She was in a real dilemma, as she could not tell Matt how she felt about him. She was suffocating as if all the words were choking her in her nasal. She simply wanted to burst out with her feelings for him. Suddenly she stopped shuffling around as she lay still on her bed. Her mind was filled with an intention, an intention to win Matt back.
“How would I do that?” she questioned with disbelief. “Jealousy!” she whispered with a tone of hope. “I KNOW! I’ll pretend to be in love with a guy and make Matt envious,” rejoiced Megan finally closing her eyes with some expectation inside her.
The next day, Megan wasted no time and hurried to Sean’s house where she could ask him for help. She was standing outside his front door and finally made an effort to knock.
“Who’s there?” yelled a male voice.
“It’s me Megan,” she mumbled.
The door opened and a tall, cute-looking hunk was timidly staring at Meagan.
“What a surprise Megan.” he blushed and welcomed her inside.
“Actually I’m in a hurry Sean but I’m here to ask you for help. You know how much I like Matt and I can’t bear the thought of him being with someone else,” she said in a weakening tone. “I thought of making him jealous by pretending to fall in love with someone else. I came to YOU for help. Can you help me?”
“Err. All right I’ll do it for you. What are friends for right?” he said in a friendly manner.
“Thank you so much. I knew you wouldn’t turn me down. I’ll see tomorrow at school okay?” she muttered with excitement.
The next day at school, Sean was waiting outside the school gate for Megan. Megan hurriedly went up to him.
“Are you clear on what to do? I explained everything to you last night across the phone,” she persisted.
“Yes, I know what to do. Let’s do it,” said Sean with complete confidence.
In lunchtime, Megan and Sean were sitting together pretending to be a couple showing their false love for each other. They were acting as if they were happy being affectionate and hugging from now and then. Both of them were waiting for Matt to see them together and in no time he came, rather looking confused on what he saw in front of him with his wondering eyes searching for answers. Megan stood up putting on a welcoming smile.
“Matt, I want you to meet my boyfriend, Sean. I wanted it to be a surprise. SURPRISE!” continued Megan facing towards Sean. Sean didn’t say anything but lifted his chin up giving an uncomfortable smile.
Matt seemed rather disturbed. He wanted to say so much but nothing could come out of him like he was choking inside.
“I’ll see you later, Megan,” mumbled Matt with as uneasy voice and walked slowly with a strange feeling bothering him inside.
All week Megan and Sean were deceiving everyone with their false love. Everyone assumed that they were incredibly in love, even Matt. Matt was however trying not to pay any attention to any of this and making sure everything was perfectly normal as it was before. He didn’t seem to spend much of his time with his girlfriend but rather alone.
It was another Friday afternoon and Megan was outside waiting for Sean. Her eyes were searching for his face everywhere and she lightened up as she found him in front of her.
“I’m sorry Megan,” he burst out as if he had planned to say this to her.
“What wrong Sean?” she questioned with innocence.
“I thought a lot about this and what we’re doing to Matt is wrong. We’re not only fooling him but we’re fooling ourselves. I like you Megan and I always have. I’ve always seen you make the right choice but this is not the right one. I’m sorry if I hurt you but I can’t go on with this,” he said with a disappointing glance and quietly walked away leaving Megan stranded.
Megan stood in front of the bathroom mirror, her eyes red and puffy with crying. Sean’s words “I like you” kept repeating over and over flooding her mind. She looked at herself and at that moment she closed her eyes and pictured Sean. Her head was filled with a reminiscence of her time with Sean. She opened her eyes with a warm smile, ran down the stairs and in no time out the door.
“Megan, what are you doing here?” questioned Sean.
Megan was standing outside without blinking her teary eyes; her heart full of words but there was nothing more to say. She ran up to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. There was no hesitation with Sean as he wrapped his hands around her. In that moment, Megan felt a tremendous tension and both of them faced tears that were irrepressible, a mixture of sweet joy.
“I love you,” whispered Megan into Sean’s ears.
“I love you too,” murmured Sean.
It was another fine early evening. Megan Andrews stopped momentarily and gazed at the expanse of the sea. In the distance, the setting sun cast an orange glow on a figure running towards Megan. In no time, he was standing in front of her.
“Why did you call me out here at this time of the evening Matt?” she curiously asked.
Matt squeezed his eyes shut and took a deep breath whilst opening it again.
“I love you Megan Andrews,” he finally said it in a soft and supple voice.
Megan stepped forward and hugged him. Both sides were quiet for a while until Megan whispered, “I’m sorry Matt. I’m sorry.” She ended her hug and turned around slowly walking along the shoreline.
Matt’s hands heavily hung down while his shoulder drooped. He squinted his eyes and stood still in a daze watching Megan’s footprints disappearing as the ocean swirled against her ankles. Eventually she was vanishing away in the sunset ending Matt’s hope but with positive expectations of new chapter in her life with Sean.
“Matt! What are you doing here early this morning?” she cried.
