I think the winner last year was Serena Williams. I am sure she reached the final at least. She beat Sharapova in the semifinal. Have I got it mixed up? www.ausopen.org

I wouldn't mind if Martina Hingis won. I don't know whom to support if she meets Justine in the final. She might have to overcome Kim to reach there in the first place, Martina.

Sixteen players are left in both the men's and women's draws. At this stage, my predictions are:
Men: Federer v Davydenko Chela v Grosjean Santoro v Nalabandian Johansson v Roddick
Semifinals: Federer v Chela Nalbandian v Roddick
Final: Federer v Roddick
Women: Devenport v Henin-Hardenne Sharapova v Petrova Schnyder v Mauresmo Hingis v Clijsters
Semi Finals: Henin-Hardenne v Sharapova Schnyder v Hingis
Final: Henin-Hardenne v Hingis
I think the players I mentioned second will be winners in both final matches.

My quarterfinals predictions in the women's draw was perfect but I can't say the same about the mens side, where I got only five right.

Australian Open 2006 I watched this year's Australian Open on my TV on the channel Star Sports. Sadly, I wasn't in Melbourne. I also read a few articles on the tournament's official webiste www.australianopen.comRoger Federer was the winner of the men's final. I watched the build up to that match and was watching it very eagerly in the first set. However, as soon as the first set finished, the electricity went out at our home and I couldn't watch any action. When the electricity came back, the people were already ready for presentation. I had a feeeling that Baghdatis had won it. The electricity had been out for two hours. Baghdatis had won the first set and for Federer to have won three sets in that time, he must have done it very comfortably. But sadly, that was what he had done. When I was watching the match, Baghdatis looked so sharp. I was really hopeful Baghdatis could win it even before the match. But it was very sad to hear that he had actually lost. Roger Federer was in tears as he received his trophy from Rod Laver in the Rod Laver Arena. Baghdatis, on the other hand, speaks really well. I don't know if he thanked his girlfriend when he was thanking everybody in the post-match presentations. However, she is some girl. She is really beautiful. Coming back to tennis, I was really impressed by the way Marcos Baghdatis played. When he played Andy Roddick in the fourth round, I really wanted Roddick to win. I had seen Roddick's earlier match and felt that Roddick was in great shape and had a chance to win. However, Baghdatis was really stunning against Roddick. He could run for every shot and hit winners all over the court. Roddick was simply outplayed. Baghdatis really impressed. After that, in the quarter fnal agains Lubicic, he won in five sets after letting a two sets to love lead slip. In the semifinal against Nalbandian, he won the match despite having lost the first two sets. Even in that match, I wanted Nalbandian to win. Nalbandian had been leading when I was watching a few glimpses of the match. To know the final score of that match was saddenning. In the David vs Goliath final, however, I had given Baghdatis a very good chance. Maybe he was too tired before the final. Roger Federer didn't drop a single set in the first three rounds. Then he dropped at least one set on the next four matches. Against Tommy Haas in the fourth round, Federer dropped two sets after taking a lead of two games to love. Federer is invincible. However, the rest of the players need to up their level and give Federer a challenge. Or else, men's tennis will be really boring. It was nice to watch Chela beat Hewitt but then he lost the next round.Gaston Gaudio, came back from two sets down to level the match at two sets all but then lost the final set against Santoro. Two rounds later, Santoro lost the second and third sets six love after losing the first seven five agains Nalabandain. The highlight of the men's tournament was Marcos Baghdatis. I'll write about the women's singles soon.

In the women's singles this year. I couldn't even watch any scene from the final or the second semifinal. I was out all day when Amelie Mauresmo beat the Belgians who had both retired in their matches. I was watching the beginning of Henin-Hardenne's semi-final against Sharapova. The match had gone with serve until Justine broke to lead 4-3 but Sharapova broke right back to level the first set before holding serve and breaking again to take the first set. In the second set, Henin had broken in the very first game when I had to leave home. I was glad that Henin-Hardenne did win and reached the finals of the Australian Open. Amelie Mauresmo surprised me by finally living upto her potential and winning a grand slam final. I remember she reached the final only to lose to Martina Hingis in 1999.
Talking about Martina Hingis, she returned to competitive tennis after coming back from retirement. I missed her during the last three years even though I didn't really like her when she was playing. I watched a few of Hingis's matches this time and I was attracted very much to this girl who had already won grand slam titles when I was still going to school. She went into her last singles match in this tournament in the quarterfinals against Kim Clijsters. Both girls were yet to drop a set in the tournament. When Kim won the first set, I thought the match was over. However, Martina won the second set to really delight me. She couldn't win the all important decider and had to bow out from the tournament. But I hope she comes back with a bang. Other women's players that I liked during the tournament were Patty Schneider, Daniela Hanchukova, and Kirlenko. I watched all three of them in matches they lost but still felt for them. Hantchukova and Schneider have been arround for a few years now and I wish these ladies can come good. Justine Hennin-Hardenne is probably my favourite women's player but I think my attempt will always be to remain neutral.
It was nice watching the Australian Open women's tournament this year. Congratulations to Mauresmo for winning her first ever grand slam title. Maybe she can go on and win the grand slam this year. But many other women will be hoping to do better in the next three grand slams.
In the doubles tournament, the women's doubles was won by a Chinese pair whose name I can neither spell nor pronounce. the men's doubles was won by the Bryan twins from USA. The mixed doubles final result was my favourite result because a woman won her fifteenth grandslam title, tenth grand slam doubles title, and first grand slam mixed doubles title. I've mentioned her name in this article already. She was making a return to tennis after three years. Yes she was Martina and her partner was the Indian Mahesh Bhupati. They beat Daniel Nestor and the Russian Likhotsova in the final where for the first time doubles tennis excited me.
