Smart Club January 28, 2006
I had lost count of it but it was the forty-third session of the smart club today. I have been in fourteen of these. If I continue I would soon be able to say I've been here most of the time.
Talking about today's first session, the co-ordinator was Anita and she did a good job. She wasn't able to start right at eight but it was because they were trying to fix the mike. When the wireless mikes didn't work it was decided that people would go and speak from the dais. The co-ordinator looked good. She probably didn't look all that confident at times but overall, she did her job well.
The predecided speaker was Bhaskar Kafle. He did a good job. Only his face was visible behind the podium but his voice was loud and clear. He proably didn't focus on the topic he was given, but he said whatever he had to say in style and with confidence.
The selfdecided speaker spoke about one of the traiditions of the Gurung community. He was focussing on the fact that it should be preserved. I didn't voice my opinion that people should be free to come out of their shell and do whatever they want to do. Rabi had a good voice and he did a good job.
I was the impromptu speaker. I had to speak for three minutes on Reduction of Trade Tariff and Economic Development. I spoke for only a minute and twenty seconds. I should have stayed there for three minutes and I should have faced questions. It was not to be. I hadn't heard any recent news of such a thing hapening. I have the opinion that trade tarriff should be minimum and I didn't even say that clearly. But as people pointed out later, I could easily have taken my time by defining the terms trade, tariff, and economic development. That would have made my speech better. When I got stuck while speaking, I decided to call it quits and then come back to my table. I wasn't that nervous. I took things lightly like I would in front of a group of friends. I said what I knew and came back. I don't think I could have said anything more than the audience knew in just defining the things. I tried to put in some questions in my speech by asking the people if there has been recent decisions to reduce trade tarriffs. It was a poor speech and I know I should have stayed there for three minutes even if I was quiet all the time. This may have been the worst impromptu speech in the smart club. I can take a few positives out of it though. It will surely help me do better next time.
The commentators came in one by one and gave their comments. Sameer Ameer who was commenting on the predecided speaker, spent more than his allotted time because he started giving out his views and spending more time on the content part. But he's really been a great person to have in the smart club. He does everything right. Dev Kumar was commentator of Rabi and he came in and gave his comments. He has a nice accent but he would still need to make sure he's grammatically correct and that he doesn't pronounce words incorrectly just for the sake of following his accent. He is grammarian next week which gives him an opportunity to improve his grammar as well.
Ajay had a tough job today because he was going to be my commentator. Sudhumna was due to be my commentator but I'm kinda glad that he wasn't here even though I was really excited that he was going to be my commentator.
The grammarians were not really ready to be grammrians today but they did their job fairly well. The time-keeper kept time pretty well and the Ah! counter counted all the Ah!s. We had an observer in Kushal Pokhrel. He spoke two lines and saying he was there for the first time. His voice had loudness and clarity and I am looking forward to hearing more from him in the future.
The chairperson, Binny, was nice. She spoke as confidently as she always does. The first session went well. Thank god there weren't too many bitter comments about my speech. I know they all realize that I made an error and that chance are that I will improve in the future.
The moderation session was moderated by Nishchal today and he did it in style. He was innovative and he was in control all the way. The two paper presenters were both very good. Sagar and Binny presented papers on Social Entrepreneurship. They both did a good job. They were both simple and nice looking presentations. The open discussion also went on well. I was one of the commentators today. I followed Mr. Dev who said most of the things I wanted to say. My comments in the second session weren't as good as my speech in the first session. I am glad that that some of them actually liked my comments there. I still felt like there were times when I lost concentration and didn't know what to say but I was able to say most of the things I wanted to day. The only thing was that I wasn't aware how much of my allotted time I had used up. One point I missed was that the speakers were blocking the projector thus lighting up their faces and creating a shadow on the screen.
The roles for next week were decided and I have no role in either of the sessions. But I will be going unless I have other things to do at that very time. It has been a good thing being at this smart club every Saturday Morning. I have realized that ever since I attended the first session I have attended every minute of every session that has been going on. No one else can say the same.
