Here is what happened on April Fools Day at the Smart Club. This was the fifty-second session of the club even though I don't know if the fiftieth session was actually a session. I missed a session for the first time since October on the forty-eighth session. The fiftieth session was celebrated as a hike on March 18. On March 25, we were shown the documentry outfoxed. There were a couple of resource persons there as well. Mr. Pathak from Kantipur Publications was quite insightful and he also talked about the blog site blog.com.np. The other resource person, Mrs. Prasain, didn't speak that much. The documentary and the conversation were both based on the biasness of the media. The hike was a wonderful experience. There weren't many of the usual smart club attendees. But still, we had a wonderful time there.
Now let me report on the smart club session as I have been doing every single day since I first attended this club.
Dev Kumar Sunuwar was today's co-ordinator. He became more relaxed as the session went on. He wasn't able to start right on time. I think it is necessary that we start at eight sharp in the morning. The co-ordinator should make sure the session takes no more than fifty minutes. We can start imposing fines on those who take longer than that time. The most interesting part of Dev's presentation was the way he introduced the topic for the impromptu speaker. That was a moment of brilliance. Contarary to that, he was too predictable when he tried to make an April fool of us.
The first speaker was Sudip Gautam. His speech was on the predecided topic of "Media and its influence." Sudip is a serious speaker. He speaks well as well. He has the confidence. I don't think he was that well prepared for this speech though. If he was, he would have known how much time he would take. I think the content of his speech wasn't that well organized. Some of his thoughts were quite controversial. He did not seem to have a very good command of the language either. Even those who have a good command falter when it comes to speaking in front. I think Sudip is a person who has the potential to become a very good speaker if he keeps practicing.
The second speaker was the self decided speaker. Suman Ghimire chose the topic "Security Council Reforms." Suman does not have command over the English language. However, in his case, the audience were able to understand everything he was trying to say. English may not be the language he has practiced too much for over the years. I know that he will be able to have a command over the language as well if he works at it. Talk about a confident speaker. Suman was just that. His facial expressions were very good. He was fantastic. He was really humorous. There may be things that he said that people may not agree to. But that's not the problem. The good thing was the wonderful way in which he was able to present his views. Even though none of his sentences were grammatically correct, he was a perfect speaker today.
The impromptu speaker was given the topic Youth and Opportunity. Sagar Dev Bhatta doesn't need to greet the chair before he starts speaking. This is not the military. It's his choice. It's very good that he has the energy while he's up and speaking there. I don't agree with the commentator and the chairperson who thought he was dancing like a disco dancer. It was his movements that made sure he wasn't nervous. He did a very good job. He had a better command of the language than all that preceded him. He spoke well for three minutes. His ending was a bitt abrupt. He put a question to the floor and said that he would have nothing to say if the audience didn't have anything to say either. That was a lame excuse. It was good that he was able to speak at such a rapid pace. He was slower than he has been in the past. But overall, his pace was good and he was relaxed. The good thing is that he believes in himself and in what he says in the front.
It's the commentators' turn now.
Sudip's commentator Krishna, should be aware of his role before he comes up and comments. He looked more like a debator than a commentator. He didn't say anything about Sudip's speech. He only gave his views against Sudip. He could have discussed those things in private later on. But then, there are a few people who love speaking their heart out in front of everybody whenever they get the opportunity. You should only speak what you are supposed to speak. It is an appreciable quality that you can stand up for your feeling and your way of thinking. But it has to be done a the right time.
Suman's commentator was Kushal. He gave his comments in a better way than did Krishna.
Manish commented on Sagar's impromptu speech. He demanded that Sagar should have addressed the chair. I feel Sagar has his freedom not to. Manish felt like Sagar's impromptu speech was an impromptu speech. That was because it was good. But Manish seemed to be saying only negative things about Sagar's speech.
The grammarians were Sanjeev and Raksha. They both did their job fairly well. Sanjeev only pointed out a few grammatical errors which he could find. Raksha was more helpful as she was able to classify the errors as well. She said it should have been many information rather than much information. I leave it upto the reader to decide what is correct.
The time keeper was Ajay Upreti. He has a wonderful way of speaking. Today he sounded wonderful with his tone. The Ah! counter Binny Bhandar was commanding as ever but made a basic error. She didn't relate the number of ums and pauses to the time the speakers spoke for.
Four observers were asked to come forward and give their views. The first was Ujjwal who was pretty good. He read out what was written in the banner of another program and tought we were in that program. Two of the observers seemed to be Sanjeev's friend who had been organizing a similar program in their college. The fourth obsever was a giant to look at. His voice was pretty loud as well. He also expressed his joy at being able to be part of the club.
Apeckshya Karki, the chairperson ended the session with a wonderful closing speech of her own. She was very good even when I first saw her in October. But I feel like even she has actually improved.
After the tea break we had the first ever session of Table Top Master. When one name was randomly picked from the hat it turned out to be my name. I had to speak on humour for two minutes. Then Lhakpa had to speak on anger for two minutes. Prajwal finally had to speak on April 1 for two minutes. Gayatri was also asked to speak on the importance of spectacles for two minutes which he failed to do. That session went very well.
Next week's roles were also decided today. I decided to become a self decided speaker. I haven't thought about my topic yet. I hope I'm still in Kathmandu till then. The co-ordinator will be Sudip Gautam. The predecided topic for next week is Education and Conflict.
We will also have the moderation session next week. The topic that was chosen today was Foreign Direct Investment. Lhakpa and Prajwal will be the paper presenters.
I have really been critical while writing all this. I have nothing in me towards any of the people whom I've written about. Whatever I felt at the time I typed these may not have been my true feelings after all. I'm too lazy to revise this after having written it. So, quite a few errors have must have crept in. It is for the reader to realize that everything I write is raw and there may be places where it makes the opposite sense. I write for the sake of writing. Typing does give me a lot of pleasure and I have become quite good at typing fast.
I've been writing about the smart club at the forum because I write everything about myself there. I don't know how long I will be able to come to this club for. I hope my membership remains intact because whenever I'm in Kathmandu, I'd love to come here and attend the sessions.
My topic next week may even be "Farewell Smart Club."
Thanks for reading but only if you have read all of this. I'm waiting to read your comments as well.
